A lecture by Prof. Martin Manalansan

This presentation engages with the recent emergence of Filipino cuisine on the global foodie stage. Together with its increasing popularity, issues of authenticity, originality and appropriation have arisen. Based on ethnographic interviews and critical readings of television shows and cookbooks, this presentation interrogates the fraught notions of national cuisine, cultural exchange, commodification, and creativity.

About the speaker:
Martin Manalansan is Associate Professor of American Studies at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities. His scholarship is located at the juncture of anthropology, cultural studies, diaspora/migration studies, critical ethnic studies, and queer/gender studies. From food to queer issues, urban space to cinema, migrant labor to neoliberal discourses, his divergent archives reflect his non allegiance to strict disciplinary concerns. That said, he maintains a deep seated and long-standing admiration for and dedication to ethnography.

He is the author of “Global Divas: Filipino Gay Men in the Diaspora” (Duke University Press, 2003; Ateneo de Manila University Press 2006). His forthcoming book entitled “Queer Dwellings” examines the affective landscapes, material conditions, ethical dilemmas and embodied experiences of undocumented queer immigrants living under precarious conditions. He is interested in how precarity, resilience, survival and suffering are enfolded into experiences of fabulousness, pathos and exuberance.

Martin is the editor or co-editor of three anthologies, most recently “Eating Asian America: A Food Studies Reader” (New York University Press, 2013), as well as several journal special issues.
